Starting Orthodontic Treatment

When Is a Good Time to Start Orthodontic Treatment?

Dental treatments can cost a lot if you wait until the last minute to have it done.

Prevention is a lot more cost effective than cure.

As a parent, it is up to you to make sure that your children are checked and treated for different dental problems.

To make things easier, here is a short guide on the potential problems you need to watch out for at specific stages in your child’s development.

Age 2 to 6 Years

This is the early treatment period. At this age, experts recommend checking for:

  • Premature loss of primary teeth
  • Underdeveloped dental arches
  • Correcting habits such as finger sucking

Any form of treatment that is started at this age is very likely to become successful. More often than not, cases treated at this phase require no further orthodontic treatment.

Ages 6 to 12 Years

A dentist calls this “the mixed dentition age” and is an ideal age to start treating severe problems. The reason for this is that at this age, the child’s hard and soft tissues are still responsive to orthopedic as well as orthodontic actions. It is also the time when the permanent incisors and 6 year molars are formed. The chances for success are very high for the following:

  • Correcting jaw malrelationships
  • Dental realignment problems

Ages 13 and Above

At the adolescent dentition phase, permanent teeth have formed. This is also the time to monitor your child’s bite, such as whether or not they have an overbite (or underbite).

Visiting your dentist or orthodontist on a regular basis will allow you to see potential problems before they occur. By having the treatments early, you can also cut back on the time and money spent undergoing dental correction treatments.

★★★★★ In my opinion, Dentistry For Children NV is one of the best Dentist Practices in Las Vegas. Dr. Dennis Clark and his staff are the best. They treat you like family and have a genuine interest in your wellbeing. I used to hate going to the dentist because of feeling like I was just another patient. All of which, went away when I scheduled my first appointment with Dr. Clark.

★★★★★ I came to Dentistry For Children NV fleeing from my previous dentist, and it was the best decision. Dr. Clark was very professional and caring and listened to my concerns that were not taken into account at my previous doctor. The office was very clean and orderly and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and you can tell they take not only dental hygiene seriously but cleanliness in general as a big priority.
